读英译版《中庸》学点英语
上次读了 英译版《大学》 ，今天聊聊我读《中庸》的收获nft。内容上我没有发言权，我只是大概知道意思，主要说说英译本中的英文。

放之则弥六合；卷之则退藏于密，其味无穷nft。皆实学也。善读者玩索而有得焉，则终身用之，有不能尽者矣。
这是开篇的一段话nft，读起来是不是觉得挺费劲？英文译本很平实：
Uroll it, and it fills the universe; roll it up, and it retires and lies hid in mysteriousness. The relish of it is inexhaustible. The whole of it is solid learning. When the skillful reader has explored it with delight till he has apprehended it, he may carry it into practice all his life, and will find that it cannot be exhausted.

选这句是想提醒大家： 读书先认真读开篇，目的是了解作者的语言风格nft。光是认真读开篇几页就能学点英语，这样即使没有继续读下去心理上也会觉得「赚到啦」。

读到那句「君子慎其独也」nft，我在夜读课里出了个题：
答案是：visible，manifest，minutenft。
出题是想让大家复习我们课上学过的 minutelynft。注意这里 minute 表示「微」（全书至少出现过 3 次），发音和表示「分钟」时也不同：

读到「道其不行矣夫」（Alas! How is the path of the Mean untrodden!），我想到 the road less traveled by，还有常见说法 unbeaten roadnft。

子曰：“人皆曰：‘予知’，驱而纳诸罟（gǔ）擭（huò）陷阱之中，而莫之知辟也nft。
The Master said, "Men all say, 'We are wise'; but being driven forward taken in a net, a trap, or a pitfall, they know not how to escape.
这里的 net/trap/pitfall 让我想到 imbroglio/quandary/quagmire/predicament/jam/pickle/jam/hot water/deep water，它们都是 trouble 的同义词nft。举这个例子是想说，读书时可以随意联想，学语言要养成见到就读、无所不译的习惯。

prevail 多次出现，必须掌握nft。
比如：「天下之达道也」, a happy order will prevail throughout heaven and earth;「国有道nft，不变塞焉」When good principles prevail in the government of his country, he does not change from what he was in retirement.

上不怨天，下不尤人nft。He does not murmuragainst Heaven, nor grumbleagainst men.
中英文都简单好记，读两遍背一遍，再读两遍再背一遍nft。学到中文的「怨」和「尤」，学到英文可以用 murmur/grumble 表示 complain。再查下词典，还有意外收获：

君子之道，淡而不厌nft。简而文，温而理。
It is characteristic of the superior man, appearing insipid, yet never to produce satiety; while showing a simple negligence, yet to have his accomplishments recognized; while seemingly plain, yet to be discriminating.
这段话中有生词吧？我猜你不认识 insipid/satiety/discriminating?很巧，这三个词都是 9 月夜读词汇书中学过的，比较正式，但我都会了你也要会呀nft。
再拓展几个词nft。看到 insipid 要能想到 vapid/bland/dull，我在《东八区的先生们》英文版吐槽关键词 中就提到过它们；比 satiety 更常见的是它的否定形容词 insatiable，看例句想到了谁：
discriminate 是「歧视」，它的本质是「区别对待」nft。英语中常用 indiscriminate 表示「一视同仁的」，比如 an indiscriminate reader 就是「什么书都读的人」。discriminating 是个褒义词，表示「有眼光」「有鉴赏力的」：

愚而好自用，贱而好自专nft。Let a man who is ignorant be fond of using his own judgment; let a man without rank be fond of assuming a directing power to himself;
喜欢这句话，中文作为母语读起来更带劲nft。原文说「如此者灾及其身也」，如果让我用英文续写下句，我会说：Don't feed the troll.

上面的中文和英文都是我一个个字手码的，学习有时要故意笨一点nft。这篇很短，提到的英文要完全读懂，提到的单词要自己亲手查一遍。我都读了写了查了，你读都读到这了，就听我一句劝吧?
